Fantastic Voyage 1st Animatic

Here is the first draft of the animatic. I'm quite happy with what I've got so far, as i think the timing and flow is good, but it still has a lot that needs to be improved apon.

Finished concept paintings

Here are the final three concept paintings for my Fantastic Voyage project. In the end, i decided to go with three dog species doing what they were bred for, which were the Dalmatian, the Bloodhound and the Husky. With these paintings I really tried to experiment with photoshop to get the best results, and while I think there is definitely more room to improve, I feel like I have gotten better in the art quality compared to some of my older work for the course.

Fantastic voyage concept art thumbnails

Here are a couple of thumbnails I did to figure out what I wanted to do for the concept paintings. I liked the idea of doing a series of dogs doing what they were bred for, so most of these revolve around that idea although there are a few that are outside that theme. Some of these can be quite hard to understand what is going on, as they were done very quickly to get my ideas out, so I'll explain briefly: The first thumbnail is depicting a Wolf looking on at a early human settlement, the second is Dalmatians running alongside a horse and cart, the third is a Husky in a snowy forest, the fourth is a Doberman looking down at a Dachsund, the Fifth is a Pointer ponting towards game, the sixth is a mix of different dog breeds next to eachother to show the range of dog features, the seventh is a Terrier investigating a rat nest, the eighth is a bloodhound tracking scent, the ninth is a farmer and sheep dogs herding, and the tenth is a Poodle going after waterfowl.

Working out the animation storyline

I decided that it would be beneficial to get all of my ideas together in regards to what I wanted to include in my animation. I have been struggling to figure out how I actually wanted the animation to go in terms of the storyline, and this has really helped me to organise my thoughts on the topics I want to include.

Fantastic Voyage prep work

When I was first given the brief for the fantastic voyage project, I was admittedly a little worried, as at first none of the topics spoke to me. Evolution out of the three seemed the most promising, so I did a little more research into which topics are covered in evolution. Through that, I remembered that selective breeding was a part of evolution. From that, I decided that the evolution of modern dogs would be a good topic for my animation.  To start, I decided to do some practice sketches of wolves to get more accustomed to their anatomy. I'm quite pleased with the results, although I think and need to work on the head and the face more.
