Kicking of Major: Environment Influence maps

I found starting Major quite difficult, which was mainly because I had quite a few tasks I needed to complete for it, from Uving, texturing and rigging the Witch model, finishing the Werewolf model, concepting the environment, figuring out the style, etc. In order to make progress with the project, I figured out which part was highest priority. As this project is focusing on the environment, it became clear that the most important part was working on the environment.

In order to create the environment, I needed to refine the rough ideas and thoughts I had in my head for each of the focal points of the environment, which are the garden, the exterior of the Witches house and surrounding forest, and the interior of the Witches house, specifically the kitchen. To do this, I created influence maps for each.

Garden influence map

I had a very clear image in my mind for the Witches garden. I knew I wanted it to be primarily a vegetable and herb garden, as the witch lives out in the forest so she'd need to be fairly self sustaining, and she'd use the garden to grow any ingredients she needs for her spells / potions. She'd also have a greenhouse to grow a bigger variety of plants.

Exterior influence map - Cottage and forest

Again, I had quite a clear image in my mind for what I wanted the exterior of the house and the surrounding forest to look like. A lot of inpiration for these aspects came from the new forest. I knew I wanted the house to be a thatched cottage in the woods, giving the Witch privacy to practice her magic and access to the ingredients that can be found in the woods. The Forest won't feature much, but the bits of it that do feature I want to give off an anchient a mystical atmosphere.

Interior influence map - the Kitchen

The Kitchen infuence map took the most time, as I had only vague ideas for what I wanted the kitchen to look like. I knew I wanted to have a big hearth with a cauldron in it, but that was really it. Through the influence map I got a clearer vision for what the kitchen is going to look like.
