Collaboration reflective statement

At the beginning of the project, I was extremely nervous about working in a group. Historically, I've really struggled working in groups, especially when it came to keeping up with everyone else. I tend to work quite slowly, which I think can come off as lazy to some people, but I like to take my time in making sure everything is perfect. Despite this, I think Lucia, Bryn and I worked quite well as a group, as we got on quite well, all had good ideas and were able to play to each other's skills and strengths quite well, and help each other out when we were stuggling. I found it nice to have people to bounce ideas off of and to get critiques from, as well as reign me in a bit when I got too carried away with things.  I really enjoyed working on the ideas we came up with as well, as they were all fun and exciting ideas. I loved how everything got more absurd throughout the animation, and even though none of us had much experience with comedy, I think the final animation was a bi

Collaboration: modelling

Next was the modelling stage. I admittedle made quite a few rookie mistakes with some of the buildings, such as tring to do something complicated with mirroring and stretching of cubes for the rims of some of the houses, when I could've just used a plane, removed the middle sections and extruded upwards. Despite this, I feel like I stuck to the concepts with the buildings and I'm pleased with the final results.  And then came the UVing. One of the aspects I hated most about last year was orthographing, but with this project I feel like I finally got it. I agreed to do most of the UVing as Lucia was struggling. This gave me a lot of experience with it, and UVing odd shapes as some of the shapes proved quite difficult. I didn't fully pull it off everywhere though, as there's some weird distortion on the brick buildings with curved/ triangle roofs. Once the UVing was done, I moved onto the texturing. I wanted to stick to the style of the concepts as much as possible, so I

Now all the concepting was done, it was time to move onto production of the animation. We decided to have Lucia and I do the modelling while Bryn tackled the animation, this way things in the animation would stay consistent and we could meet the deadline easier. Before doing the modelling, we had to do orthographs for the buildings. Lucia and I also decided to split that up evenly. Here's mine:

Collaboration: Storyboards and animatic

Image
Next for the project was creating the storyboards and then the animatic. Similar to the initial concepts, we decided to takle one skit each, the same one we did for the initial concepts. So, I did the pillow skit. The main thing I wanted to get across with these was the fact that everyone was slowly falling asleep from the lack of pillows, including the presenter. After that came the animatic. It was my job to stitch it all together, and then Bryn would put the sounds on top. I think it came out quite well!

Collaboration: Breaking news titlecard

We decided early on that we wanted to have a news style transition card in between the skits, so after coming up with a couple colour concepts and deciding on the one that looked best, I animated it.   This is the one that was used in the animatic. After talking it over with Simon in the crit, he suggested changing it so it came in slowly and then sped up, as it looked a little strange in the animatic. Taking this on board, I updated it for the final animation:

Collaboration: concept art

The next stage of the project was working on the concept art. After deciding on the style for the animation, which was simple, bright colours and shapes for the buildings, along with being cartoony to match moom, I did some concept art for what the city might look like, as well as some of the individual buildings:  For thebuildings in the street, I took a lot of inspiration from places like london and amsterdam, where you have lots of different buildings of varying sizes and colours, along with time periods. I also decided to take the concept art I did and turn it into an alien invasion, which would give us an idea of what would be beamed up in the animation. Building on the city concept arts, I decided to do some concepts for individual buildings in the city to get a better idea of how exactly they'd be modelled. I had the idea to do two larger, more generic buildings in varying colours that could be repeated many times, and then a few more unique buildings. This would give the c

Collaboration : first concepts

At the very beginning of the collaboration project, my team was assigned the brief of Newsflash/ News report. We quickly decided that we were gonna do three skits, each of the getting more absurd as the animation goes on. The skits we decided to do were an Alien Invasion, all the pillows have dissapeared, and global warming has caused all the corn fields to turn into popcorn.  For the beginning concepts, we decided to tackle a skit each. I went with the pillow shortage skit, and came up with these: My ideas for this skit were that people in the city would eventually all fall asleep from not being able to sleep properly, and trying to find alternatives to pillows. I'm quite happy with how these came out, considering I was getting back into the swing of things being back at Uni.

Film review- Tremors

A B movie is defined as a low budget commercial film. The term originates from the golden age of Hollywood, and specifically the use of a ‘double-feature’ in cinemas. This is where cinemas sold two films for the price of one and was seen as good value for money in the times of the great depression. It would often be that the first film was the higher budget film with a larger amount of advertising and the second film was often the lower budget, less advertised film. With the creation of television and the usage of double features stopping, B movies quickly became films released straight to TV, only a few having cinema releases. The aim of a B movie is to make as much money on as little budget possible, and this is often reflected in the genres these films use.   One of the most popular genres for B movies to use was the monster genre. These are films or books that contain some kind of monster as a major part of the story, whether that’s something smaller like zombies or vampires, o

Film review - The incredibles

The differences between the plot and the story can be quite hard to understand at first, and often they seem like the same thing and the terms are often used to describe each other. However, the terms do have different meanings. The story is the basic information of a film – Who the characters are, what is happening, and where it is taking place. The plot is a structural writing device to help deliver the story in a compelling way- How they are confronted with the problems that face them, when in the character’s lives the events of the story happen, and why the characters react in the way they do. Essentially, the story is the foundation, and the plot is everything else built on top. This takes us onto the Incredibles – how does the plot impact the story, and vice versa? The Incredibles is more plot driven than story driven, so basically the events happen to the characters rather than the characters directly causing the events. To fully understand plot vs story in the Incredibl
